The FIFA Club World Cup Japan 2011 final was billed as a showdown between Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Santos’s Neymar – the current king of football and one of the principal pretenders to his throne. The two South American stars would, of course, eventually become team-mates at the Catalan giants in 2013.
In the end, it was Pep Guardiola’s men who claimed a second world crown in Yokohama, recording a dominant victory over the Copa Libertadores holders as Xavi, Cesc Fabregas and adidas Golden Ball winner Messi all registered themselves on the scoresheet in the decider.
